The surgical mask has two functions:
- Contain the projection of saliva drops and secretions from the user's upper airways. When used by a healthcare professional, the surgical mask prevents eventual contamination of the patient and the environment (atmosphere, surfaces, material and equipment, surgical field). When used by a patient with a contagious disease, it prevents it from infecting others and the environment itself.
- Protect the user from infections transmitted by droplets or splashes of organic fluids. In the latter case, the surgical mask should be composed of a waterproof layer. Some models have a visor to protect the eyes.
